Fishing February – time for a springer?
Early seasonal fishing has its benefits. Not only is it an opportunity to learn the water for little cost but you certainly have a chance of catching a fabulous fish. Low and cold water slows the fish up, this can be a good thing giving them more time to engage with that fly.
The first 10 days of the season saw around 25 fish caught on the Tweed. As far as big rivers go, the Tweed is leading as the Tay and Dee haven’t shown much movement yet. Lower middle Tweed seem to do well in the early season, and being located at the ‘Bottom Tweed’ Milne Graden is a good spot!
My Loop at the ready, stacked with an 1,5” Willie Gunn I wandered down for a few hours on the 13th February 2023. Couldn’t resist the temptation to cast a few. Bright sunshine causes questionable conditions but all possible if that springer is there.
Sadly, I was unable to pull one out but I caught word on the ‘Ghillie Grapevine’ that a 15lb’er had been caught only a few metres away at Ladykirk. I look forward to my next visit in a few weeks’ time and continue to persevere.
If you have a spare day, don’t hesitate to come up and cast a line out. There is always a great sense of achievement catching the first of the season. It could be you!
