The start of Summer Water with Sea Trout Fishing at Milne Graden

That magical time of year again where these extraordinary fish show themselves here at Milne Graden, especially in areas of low streamy water like the Stream or around the Cauld.

We have seen the start of warm balmy evenings when sea trout are confident to come into the main body of water.

DIARY ENTRY

Wednesday 22nd June 2022

The evening was electric and a perfect time to enjoy the water. Having prepared myself and chosen a small 11’ switch rod, I carefully waded into the centre of the River Tweed. Easily disturbed, the pools are tricky to approach. The sun sank over the tree tops leaving behind it a blazing warming glow, as if giving the day its last shot of energy in a golden light.

I was very careful to do what I was told by Bob and cast gently so not to scare the fish. 4 or 5 casts down the pool and bam – there he was!

When caught you are faced with dynamic summersaults and energetic gymnastics, meaning they are hard to hold on to. He shot out and shook like mad, then shot at a mighty pace right back in my direction, the line was loosening. He was still here but only for a brief moment. A second later he managed to break loose and abruptly left the scene.

The water was left empty from his presence and the only thing which seemed more alive than ever was my heart thumping, fuelling me with adrenaline. These fish are hard to catch and put up a fantastic sporting fight. Definitely an art which I need to practice.

Evenings like this fly by but the moments last forever.
